Assurance horizons

SERGEANT sits in the middle horizon of Northrop Grumman's broader PNT assurance arc — the near-term modernization step between today's legacy GPS/INS stack and the long-term Assured PNT vision.

1. Today

   Legacy GPS/INS

   • Embedded GPS/Inertial (EGI) systems are ubiquitous.
   • Navigation solution drifts once GPS is lost; time drifts quickly.
   • Platform sensors and effectors depend on GPS for coordinated time and a common grid.
   • Easily jammed, spoofed, or disrupted — severely degrading navigation and time service.
   • Closed architecture; OEM support required to develop, test, and integrate new capabilities.
2. Near-term

   Modernized EGI

   • Resilient Timing core — enhanced multi-oscillator implementation with less environmental sensitivity and longer coasting than a chip-scale atomic clock (CSAC).
   • Modernized military GPS receiver with time-aiding for rapid GPS recovery after outages.
   • Advanced Civil Integrity filter detects and repairs signal integrity faults.
   • Multi-Factor Anti-Jam and Anti-Spoof.
   • DO-178 and DO-254 safety-certification path for airworthiness.
   • SERGEANT SDR as the modernized signal engine.
3. Long-term

   Assured PNT

   • Mission System Integration — assured PNT is built-in, not bolted-on.
   • Multi-Sensor Fusion across platform sensors to reduce navigation and timing dependence on GPS.
   • SERGEANT SDR provides the common grid and UTC, with cognitive capabilities and support for new signals.
   • Multi-Factor Anti-Jam mitigates current and emerging threats via adaptive and cognitive algorithms.
   • Multi-platform Coherence enables distributed and collaborative position/timing (MUM-T, distributed ISR, swarming).
   • Networked Navigation Warfare disseminates threat awareness through back-end networks such as JADC2.
